Sufism

Tasawwuf (Sufism) is the way of sorting out and cleaning the nafs (lower-self), purifying the soul and by this way advancing to the realm of pure divinity.

It is not outside of religion, on the contrary, it is religion itself. Tariqs (paths) are the branches of Tasawwuf while sects are the branches of fiqh (law). Denying them is ignorance. What differentiates insaan (human) from an animal is the heart. The heart is a grace of God given only to the children of Adam in order for them to know their Creator. It is God’s love.

The secret of creation. The heart’s perfection is reached by Tasawwuf and invoking the names of the Creator enormously and endlessly.
Pîr-i Gâlibî H. Gâlip Hasan KUŞÇUOĞLU(K.S.)
The Pir of Galibiyya, Hazrat Haji Galip Hassan Kuscuoglu (q.s.)
If we would like to be happy in the Earth and Hereafter, let us strive for the joy of being a servant to our Creator. Let us not stay away from the pleasure and joy of being a worthy servant of our Lord. Let it be our purpose and joy to be in the same league with the elated servants who have been granted a piece from the infinite mercy of God, been revived (ihya) and have become a means to divine mercy. (O Allah) Let us not be deprived of the mercy of carrying out our duties as a servant of faith and sincerity, seeing with the eye of the spirit and heart and knowing the truth as much as necessary for us.

"You have gathered knowledge, but ignored the pure heart, I pity the fortune you have lost."

Let us know the way of asking and begging (Allah) using the language of (our) state (lisan al-hal) and our attitudes and behaviours favored by Hazrat Allah. The desires and wishes which do not pass by the path of the heart that is the dwelling place of God’s look (nazargah-ı ilahi)) are rarely credited before God. The path of the pure heart which passes (first) from the heart to the brain is the path of the people of the “haal” (state of spiritual consciousness) and people of the divine love (ahl al-ashk). The opposite course from the brain to the heart cannot extend beyond Ilm-ul-yaqeen (the knowledge of certainty).Listen to Mohammad Iqbal’s warning with the ear of the heart and contemplate. It is naive that you assume obtaining the things of matter and sense without any resort to the means, in other words God’s mercies. I am sorry but this naivety is not purity or innocence, but stupidity.

O! the Children of Adam! You are not an ordinary creature and a thing (al-‘ashya’) that was put under Adam’s order. You are the secret and the kernel of the Creation; a means to the knowledge of Hazrat Allah. You have similarities with the other created beings and yet you have a natural potential to become “Insaan” (Al-İnsan al-Kamil: The Complete Person); the sea of sense. You are created out of God’s love. You are created available for knowing your own Creator. You have been given the facility and opportunity to know your Creator as much as you know your nothingness.

The Pir of Galibiyya, Hazrat Haji Galip Hassan Kuscuoglu (q.s.)
O! The loyal person who praises his/her Creator, thanks Him, invokes Him a lot (kathira), tries to sustain his life joyfully following God’s orders, admires his Creator by experiencing the truth in every phase of his life! Have no doubt, all of these virtues witness that you are in love with your Creator.

“Love” is heavenly in meaning. There is no such thing as sensual love. What is sensual is urge, desire, what your lower-self (nafs) needs. Sensual love ends when you reach the object of desire. Heavenly love, on the other hand, increases with proximity. Ultimate union is not the end of heavenly love. The manifestation of heavenly love does not include the self’s pleasure. It is spiritual nourishment, the wisdom of and reason for Creation, the hallmark of mankind’s haal (state of consciousness)… all in all it means “Tasawwuf”.

Know well that transferring even the partial free-will given to you to the Lord of the Creation and Majesty is out of servanthood!

(God rest his soul)
How beautifully the deceased poet Mehmet Akif (rip) put into words in his Safahat (book of poems), the situation of those who have the ugly thought (of that mentioned above) due to their laziness, ignorance, and being unaware of a servant’s duty. Quoting these lines of wisdom, I am trying to announce to my disciple fellows that we admire this idea. It is our firm conviction and attitude.

“It is destiny” ha? No-never, that’s not true;
You asked for your doom, Allah gave it to you.
While the law ordered you to work, you idled,
Within which lots of superstitions you fabricated.
In between, you inserted “complete trust in Lord”
And turned the poor religion of yours into a joke.
Stop working; from where you sit, you order
Not get tired, He is your day-laborer
Before you leave home, write down your errands
Read them one by one as you finish the items
All those are my Lord’s job, He sure has to do
O! Burden is lightened; to a coffeehouse you can go!
Your kids live a dog’s life, in hunger and misery
Isn’t God your deputy, so you keep making merry!
His treasury is sure your own pay office!
Transfer the expenses, he pays all the bills.
The weapon, it is Him, who uses
The frontier, again Him, who defends
When your supplies are finished
It is Him who obtains

By the armies of angels, pulled under His command,
Him sweeps away the heathen, again in your stead.
Are you in trouble? Your delicate voice is enough:
“Rescue!” and He sends Khidr or better, He Himself comes.
Someone at home gets sick, it is His debt; he’ll take care
Healing source will flow in streams, not a moment to spare.
So Allah is your everything; your handmaid, your hod carrier
The kids belong to Him, your servant*, sister, childminder
It is Him: Your steward, your butler, your treasurer;
You get it; He pays the price, He is the responsible.
There will be a war in the sea… Your ship is Him. He is your captain.
You’ll also need an army? Your soldier is Him. He is your guardian.
He is the repressor in the village, tax collector in the city;
He is a family doctor, pharmacist… your everything exactly.
Who are you then? The resigned(!) No longer can you fool!
A little bit of esteem is needed. Indeed, how disrespectful!
He made God his servant, himself became God;
How dare he call this dare “complete trust in God”?!…

n the Masnavi, in the verse 2960 and following, Hazrat Mawlana indicated the meaning of the tenth ayah of Surah al-Fath (the Victory) clearly. In the text below our Prophet Muhammad tells Hazrat ‘Ali (kw) and thus to us, his unable ummah, the secret of becoming insaan (the complete person). He explicitly shows the light of mercy bestowed upon the paths of people of invocation and love (ahl-al-dhikr and ahl-al-ashk) by declaring the mercy of God granted to us.

Our Prophet said to Hazrat ‘Ali (r.a.):

“O ‘Ali, you are the Lion of Allah, strong, courageous, most valiant,
Yet confide not in thy lion-like valour,
But seek refuge under the palm-trees of the ‘Hope’.
Come under the shadow of the Wise Murshid
That man turns not away from obedience to him in any way.
His shadow on earth is as that of Mount Qaf,
His spirit is as a Simurgh soaring on high.
Were I to tell his praises till the last day,
My words would not be too many nor admit of curtail-
ment.
He is the sun of the spirit, not that of the sky,
For from his light men and angels draw life.
That sun is hidden in the form of a man,
Understand me! Allah knows the truth.
O ‘Ali, out of all forms of religious service
Choose thou the shadow of that man favored by the mercy of Allah.!
Every man takes refuge in some form of service,
And chooses for himself some asylum;
Do seek refuge in the shadow of the wise man,
That you may escape your fierce secret foes.
Of all forms of service this is fittest for you;
You shall surpass all who were before you.
Having chosen your Pir, be submissive to him.
Even as Moses submitted to the commands of Khizr;
Have patience with Khizr’s actions, O sincere one!
Lest he says, ‘There is a partition between us.’
Though he staves in your boat, yet hold your peace;

Though he slays a young man, heave not a sigh.
God declares his hand to be even as God’s hand,
For He said, “The Hand of Allah is placed on their hands.”
The hand of Allah impels him and gives him life;
Nay, not life only, but an eternal soul.
A Pîr is needed; travel not the road alone,
Take not your own way through this desert!
Whoso travels this road alone
Only does so by aid of the might of holy men.
The hand of the Pir is not weaker than theirs;
His hand is none other than the grasp of Allah!
If absent saints can confer such protection,
Doubtless present saints are more powerful than absent.
If such food be bestowed on the absent,
What dainties may not the guest who is present expect?
The courtier who attends in the presence of the king
Is served better than the stranger outside the gate.
The difference between them is beyond calculation;
One sees the light, the other on]y the veil.
Strive to obtain entrance within,
If you would not remain as a ring outside the door.
Having chosen your Murshid, be not weak of heart,
Nor yet sluggish and lax as water and mud;
But if you take umbrage at every rub,
How will you become a polished mirror?”
Even if men were angels, with no help from God, their record (of deeds) would come out in black (full of sins).
Angels also need the help of God, and the intercession of the Complete Men who are God’s finest servants .

Our Prophet Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (staw) tells us, in the person of Hazrat ‘Ali that Hazrat Allah (jj) has made it essential for His finest servants to reach perfection (to become insaan) that one must take the oath of initiation to a Murshid who is the Prophet’s heir, God’s courtier, who is the embodiment of the metaphysicial and secret knowledge of God’s organization and arrangement (of everything).

(The section from Masnavi above points out the time before Hazrat ‘Ali (ra) was gratified with the rank of “Shah al-Wilayat” (the King of Authority)). When Hazrat ‘Ali (ra) was gratified with the rank of the King of Authority, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (staw) considered it necessary to inform his ummah and those faithful servants of Allah, in the person of Hazrat ‘Ali (ra) that the Light of Muhammad (Noor al Muhammad) takes its source from God’s light. Following this statement, Hazrat ‘Ali (kw) has been appointed as the shah of the station of wilayat, he has obtained the rank of the “Shah al-Wilayat”.

Our Prophet said, “this is the true path, this is God’s path which goes to the knowledge city of the Light of Muhammad.” The saying, “Ana madinatul ilm wa ali babuha” (“I am the city of knowledge, and ‘Ali is its gate”) thus explains the people of the path (ahl al-Tariq).
Pîr-i Gâlibî H. Gâlip Hasan KUŞÇUOĞLU(K.S.)
The Pir of Galibiyya, Hazrat Haji Galip Hassan Kuscuoglu (q.s.)
The Light of Muhammad is manifested by the spiritual identities of our elders of the path, who have been means of access to God’s mercy until the Resurrection Day. You shall have no doubt. Be mindful of this mercy of God… The holy identity of our Prophet is not the borderline of God’s orders; God’s sayings target every one of His servants.

The Darwish has only one sheik. He can also be called “baba” (TN: father in Turkish) since he is an agent in the spiritual birth. When you think about it, there is only one father in the physical world. The same holds for the spiritual realm. The elders said, “If one has two fathers, he is actually unfathered.”

The Lord of the Creation and Majesty says:
“Name your sons after their fathers; if you do not know who their fathers are, they are your ‘brothers-in-religion’.”(Al-Ahzab, 5)

A darwish whose sheik passed away can be accepted into another order only if the Lord of the Creation and Majesty has not put another sheik in charge in his place and only if he joins the current order by means of istikhara (TN: a spiritual dream seen after a special prayer is performed before sleep to find your path and sheik). He won’t perform his old list of invocations, but the litanies and invocations he took from the current Sheik. His sheik is the old one but his master of discipline has changed. Everything else stays the same. The Darwish must be loyal.

The Darwish has only one sheik! Never two! It is in accord with the rules and conventions that murshids help each other by tabarruk (TN: seeking Allah’s Blessing by virtue of something associated with those close to Allah) in the way of gnosticism (irfan). This is God’s grace. The doors of benefit are left open, and yet the border line is again designated by the Holy Station.
